Assessment
It is interesting to think of how our schools really assess us. I remember being in middle school, and failing my math class. My teachers and parents told be I failed because I was lazy, I wasn't working hard enough, and I needed to put more effort into Math. There could of course be no other problems because I passed all of my other topics. Looking back at this I can remember that my parents were going through a messy divorce, my mom was working every night, and I had to cook dinner every night, as well as take care of my little brother and toddler sister. It's true that I wasn't really interested in math, and I had 20-30 math problems for homework every night. My other classes were more interesting, they had more reading (which I love), and was much more interesting for me.
Was the "F" that term a good assessment of my ability to do math. I don't think so. I think it was a good assessment of how a depressed 7th grader got through a difficult time in her life, by blowing off her math homework and reading books like The Hobbit, and Little Women instead.
This fun artifact was a collaboration between some of my peers. It was fun to create, because we started by throwing out words and ideas that we each had about assessment. Soon some themes started to emerge through our thoughts. Then we decided to create a mind-map to help organize our concepts.
